- Last updated
- Feb. 23, 2026
- Notes
- Standard naturalisation based on residence generally requires 5 years of reckonable (countable) lawful residence within the last 9 years, including 1 year of continuous residence immediately before applying. “Reckonable residence” depends on the immigration permission held (e.g., Stamp 1/3/4/5 are reckonable; Stamp 2/2A study permissions are not). Spouses/civil partners of Irish citizens may qualify on a reduced residence period (3 years residence on the island of Ireland in the last 5 years, including 1 year continuous immediately before applying) if other conditions are met. From 8 Dec 2025, people granted International Protection generally need 5 years reckonable residence before applying (earlier applications were processed under the prior rule). Applications are handled by Immigration Service Delivery (ISD), Department of Justice, with an online application route and documentary proof requirements for each year claimed.
- Dual citizenship
-
Dual citizenship: Allowed
Renunciation required: No
- Notes for dual citizenship
- Ireland generally allows dual/multiple citizenship. Naturalisation does not generally require renunciation of prior citizenship under Irish law (separate foreign-law renunciation rules may exist depending on the other country).
Qualifying residence permits
Short-stay / visitor permission (generic)
Visitor/short-stay presence is not a standard basis for meeting the multi-year reckonable residence requirement for naturalisation.
Doesn’t count
Stamp 1G (Certain categories, incl. eligible graduates / spouses of CSEP holders, etc.)
ISD notes certain Stamp 1G periods are considered reckonable residence for citizenship/naturalisation purposes.
Counts
Stamp 1 (Work / business permission)
ISD states Stamp 1 is reckonable as residence when applying for citizenship by naturalisation (typically linked to an employment permit or specific ISD permission).
Counts
Stamp 2A (Study permission - non-ILEP / specific cases)

Counts
Stamp 4EUFAM / permissions under EU Treaty Rights (as relevant)

Stamp 4 (Permission to remain; incl. post-employment permit pathways, family, protection, etc.)
ISD states Stamp 4 is reckonable as residence when applying for citizenship by naturalisation.
