Notes
Standard adult naturalisation typically requires 5 years lawful residence in the UK and being free from immigration time restrictions at the date of application (for the standard route this is usually required for at least 12 months; spouses/civil partners of British citizens generally use a 3-year route without the 12-month “free from time restrictions” period). Applicants must normally meet residence/absence limits (commonly: <=450 days absent in 5 years and <=90 days absent in the last 12 months; spouse route commonly: <=270 days absent in 3 years and <=90 days absent in the last 12 months). Applicants must also meet knowledge of language and life in the UK requirements (English at CEFR B1+ unless exempt, plus Life in the UK test), provide referees, and attend a biometrics appointment through UKVCAS. The Home Office also applies “good character” and other policy requirements per Guide AN.
Dual citizenship
Dual citizenship: Allowed
Renunciation required: No
Notes for dual citizenship
The UK allows dual/multiple citizenship and does not require renunciation of your existing citizenship to become British. However, your other country may restrict dual nationality—check that country’s rules.

Qualifying residence permits

EU Settlement Scheme: Settled status
Settled status is a form of being free from immigration time restrictions for naturalisation purposes. Evidence is typically digital status plus identity document(s). See Home Office Guide AN and GOV.UK naturalisation guidance.
Counts
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) / Indefinite Leave to Enter (ILE)
Settlement status (free from immigration time restrictions). Standard route generally expects settled status/ILR at application and commonly for 12 months (unless spouse/civil partner route). See Home Office Guide AN and GOV.UK naturalisation guidance.
Counts
Limited leave to remain (work/study/family routes)
Periods of lawful residence under limited leave can count toward the qualifying residence period, but applicants must be free from immigration time restrictions (settled) by the time they apply to naturalise.
Counts
Visitor / short-stay permission
Visitor status is not a residence route to naturalisation and does not normally support the lawful-residence residence clock for naturalisation.
